Humming and buzzing while it hovers in the sky, this mechanical insect has allowed for photographic excellence through different perspectives and angles of the world. South African born and Cape Town local, Eddie Oosthuizen, runner-up in the Cape Town category, was able to capture the peculiars of the Cape using his drone. Eddie has mastered aerial photography, seizing beautiful moments in time and capturing the Mother City at her finest. Here’s more about Eddie:
Tell us a bit about yourself:
I’m a 30 year old software engineer and aerial photographer from Cape Town. Not only do I have a keen interest in aerial photography but I also build and race FPV racing drones.
Where did your interest in Drones and aerial photography come from?
Ironically enough, I got into drones as a way to deal with my intense fear of heights. While growing up, I always kept far away from flying and anything that involved me not having my feet firm on the ground. This meant that I never really had that aerial view of the world, something which aerial photography really opened my eyes to!
We are blessed that we live in a time where we can show the world a whole different perspective.
Tell us more about your runner-up photo?
The photo was taken at seven in the morning of the 27th of November 2016. It depicts concrete wave breakers or Dolosse, which is a South African invention, protecting a small, peaceful Cape Town boat harbour from the tides of the vast two oceans which meet at Cape Town. These being the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean on the West and the warmer Indian Ocean waters on the East.
What do you love most about Cape Town?
Cape Town feels like another world, where every day feels like a holiday and every road trip is a new adventure. It is one of the few places in the world which has vast wine regions, age-old historic coastal towns,and grand state-of-the-art urban cities.
How long have you been doing photography? Do you do it professionally?
I’ve been casually taking photos for about two years now. I’m definitely not a professional.

What do you find most beautiful about Africa?
Africa is a land of natural beauty, it has sights and places that need to be explored and seen to be fully appreciated.
What would you suggest travelers to Africa should add to their bucket lists?
Cape Town and its outlying regions (The Weskus route / Stellenbosch Winelands).
