When people think of Cape Town they think of the flat mountain that comes with it, our very own Table Mountain. It’s one of the 7 Wonders of Nature and a World Heritage Site and at a whopping 280 million years it’s one of the oldest mountains in the world. Kim Bouchier is one of the runners-up for the Cape Town category of Africa’s Photographer of the Year, with her incredible Tableview shot of the iconic mountain. Here’s a bit more about her and her photo.
Tell us a bit about yourself?I am a married mom of two girls, learning to SUP (stand-up paddleboard) and love being outdoors with my camera. Can you tell us a bit more about your photo that is a runner-up?Living on the other side of the mountain I never know what the weather conditions are like from Tableview so one has to try several times before you have the correct conditions for a good sunset. I had a feeling it might be good and thought I would give it a bash. I’m so glad I did because it was a magnificent sunset, with colours changing continuously. What do you love most about Cape Town?Cape Town really is a beautiful city. The weather and light conditions change constantly, creating many opportunities for enjoyable photography. We really are spoilt with all the beautiful beaches and the mountains. How long have you been doing photography? Do you do it professionally?I am a passionate amateur photographer. I started learning about photography in about 2011. At first, I didn’t know which genre of photography I would enjoy. I tried several and finally settled on landscapes and some wildlife. Recently, I have started shooting ‘Big Wave’ surfing from a rubber duck with some land-based surfing as well. Do you have any tips for capturing the perfect Cape Town moment?Keep your camera with you! Many times I’ve kicked myself for not having it with me. You never know what mother nature will offer. What do you find most beautiful about Africa? The sheer beauty around us. We are incredibly blessed to live in this awesome country of ours, with such diverse weather, wildlife, people, cultures, and landscape. What would you suggest travellers to Africa should add to their bucket lists?Well, Cape Town of course. Always a good place to start and then work your way up the Garden Route to the Cango Caves and the Addo Elephant Park, which is an incredible park that offers so much and is malaria-free. The Eastern Cape has many private game parks on offer. The wild coast beaches are stunning and have warm water. The Hole in the Wall is a truly breathtaking location. Once you reach Durban, with its fabulous beaches, you can move on to one of the many game parks just a few hours away. Do it over several days/weeks, stopping at the many interesting towns along the way. Don’t leave the interior out either there are so many wonderful “dorps” towns in the Karoo. |
