Our Africa’s Photographer of the Year competition is now on its final leg with the Africa off the Beaten Track category. While there aren’t strict parameters about the subjects captured, wildlife and scenery is of course key! We’ve covered Africa’s Hidden Gems and now we look towards Africa’s forests where some of the rarest creatures on the continent reside.

Abundant Rivers

An aspect of the wild that is often not photographed is river and ocean life. We love to see original shots, especially in our final category where we have already viewed thousands of entries including big cats, the Big 5 and colourful birdlife. Surprise our panel of judges with different perspectives, bright colours and rare creatures that perhaps no one else has managed to capture.

Our contestants have travelled far and wide, entering shots taken among Uganda and Rwanda’s pristine flora. Africa’s forests are largely untouched because of efforts on the part of researchers and conservationists and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience due to the rarity of these mountain gorillas.

Our team at Rhino Africa also recently travelled to the Congo which contains “Africa’s Amazon” – over 1,3 million hectares of radiant rainforest. Here you can embark on a conservation tour designed to showcase the lush vegetation as well as the cultural heritage of the surrounds. The photograph above shows the canopies of Odzala National Park, home of the western lowland gorilla.

Forest Meets Bush

There are many different biomes that weave through the forest network including grasslands which feed an assortment of wildlife such as elephants and forest buffalo. Why not safari through the bush and venture into the greenery of the trees in the same trip?
