Best of APOTY 2018

Africa’s Photographer of the Year has now come to an end and to celebrate all the breathtaking entries, we have compiled some of our favourites from each category. Our Africa Off the Beaten Track winner has not yet been announced but you can still read some of the other interviews with our winners of Capture Africa, Roaring Lions & Big Cats as well as Wildlife Portraits. APOTY 2018 has been a wild ride and we thought to close it off, we would show you some of the photographs that haven’t yet been displayed on our blog posts.

Capture Africa

Certainly one of the brighter categories, our first is also our most delicate of the four. Our contestants got to show us their perception of the continent with spectacular displays of wildlife. The rich landscapes also stand out, with fynbos, pools and rocks providing vivid backdrops for these fascinating fauna.

Roaring Lions & Big Cats

This category speaks for itself as it’s full of big cats and hunting scenes! Our photographers have worked to freeze the essence of these animals which are known to be elusive and hide from the camera’s lens. From night photography to near-impossible shots of baby cheetahs, our contestants have done themselves proud.

Wildlife Portraits

Our Wildlife Portraits entries are of course focussed on animals but we weren’t prepared for exactly how exquisite these shots would be! Our photographers have managed to connect with the private lives of shy or difficult-to-capture creatures.

Africa Off the Beaten Track

This category explores the lesser-seen creatures and the wilder aspects of nature that aren’t ordinarily captured by wildlife photographers. Not only limited to wildlife, our contestants have managed to take a few shots of cultural insights as well.

Check back in next year for more entries as our Africa’s Photographer of the Year 2019 opens. APOTY 2018 will make one more appearance though, with the announcement of our overall competition winner in January. Our ultimate winner delights in a nine-night stay at three luxury safari lodges in Africa. Be sure to enter one of our 2019 categories and stand a chance to make a name for yourself as the next Africa’s Photographer of the Year.
